Updated: Sacred Theatre Journey to the American Southwest

Day 1: September 25th – Albuquerque, NM

• Check-in to Holiday Inn Express (Albuquerque Old Town) by 4 pm; gathering in a meeting room there at 5
• 7 pm: Go across street to have dinner at the Pueblo Harvest Café (inside the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center)

We begin a journey to witness and celebrate the ways a culture survives: through making art, telling stories, acknowledging its history, and honoring its ceremonies.

Day 2: September 26th – Albuquerque > Acoma > Gallup, NM

• Breakfast bar at Holiday Inn Express; Check-out and luggage ready for bus by 8:15 am.

• 8:45 – A self-guided tour at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center to discover the history, culture, and art of the 19 pueblos of New Mexico; observe a traditional dance from one of the pueblos.

• Board bus, drive to Acoma Pueblo Visitor Center; have lunch at Café

• Travel west to the Keres-speaking Pueblo of Acoma, known as “Sky City.” During a walking tour of the ancient village at 3:30, you will learn the history of the pueblo and have the opportunity to meet with artisans.
• Continue westward to Gallup, New Mexico where we will enjoy a group dinner at one of the historic restaurants.

Day 3: September 27th – Gallup, NM > Zuni Pueblo

• Breakfast bar at Hampton Inn; ready to leave by 8 am to drive to Zuni Pueblo Visitor Center.

• 9:30: Zuni World View Program

• Lunch at private home (traditional Zuni food)

• Zuni Music and Dance Program

• Dinner party

Day 4: September 28th – Gallup, NM > Window Rock, AZ

• Breakfast at Hampton Inn

• Cross the border into Arizona for a tour at the Navajo Nation Museum. Explore contemporary and traditional exhibits that promote Diné culture, language, history and sovereignty.

• A picnic lunch will be served at Navajo Arts and Crafts Center

• Visit other sites

• Dinner at hotel next door to museum

• Back to Gallup

Day 5: September 29 – Gallup > Chimayo > Taos, NM

• Breakfast at Hampton Inn, check out and load and go by 8:00 am

• We will depart for Taos early in the morning and stop at Chimayo. 3.5 hours. The fertile village of Chimayo, nestled in the Sangre de Cristo foothills, is known for its Santuario and its unique, sought after varietal of red chile.

• Lunch at the Rancho de Chimayo and enjoy traditional cuisine of the area.
• Visit Santuario de Chimayo. For generations, American Indians, Hispanics, and other people of faith have traveled here to ask for healing for themselves and others. El Santuario is now one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States and one of the most beautiful examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in New Mexico.
• Drive to Centinela Traditional Arts in Chimayo to discover the history of Rio Grande Saltillo weaving.
• Drive to Taos. Hampton Inn check-in.
• Dinner on own.

Day 6: September 30 – Taos, NM

• EARLY breakfast Hampton Inn

• Depart 7 am for Taos Puebloe. Attend San Geronimo Feast Day to attend the dances, feasting, and a religious ceremony amongst family and friends.

• (Or come later on public or taxi/uber but it will be tricky to find each other without cellphones) [PHONES AND CAMERAS WILL BE CONFISCATED]

• Lunch on own from Feast day vendors

• Bus pick-up at 5 pm

• Dinner and evening gathering

Day 7: October 1st – Taos

• Breakfast at Hampton Inn

• Depart 9:30. Visit the Millicent Rogers Museum located in a 1920s hacienda and come face-to-face with the diverse heritage of the American Southwest. From prehistoric pottery to contemporary jewelry, this is the place to experience all of the different cultures of the southwest.

• Lunch together at Bella’s Mexican Grill

• Afternoon and dinner on own;

• Bus rendezvous/pickup at 6

• Meeting time

Day 8: October 2nd – Taos > Abiquiu > Santa Fe, NM

• Hampton Inn Breakfast
• Packed, loaded and on bus by 8 am for Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, O’Keeffe Center. Surrounded by magnificent, multilayered cliff walls, red hills, and expansive mesas, people from throughout the world come to this location to create art, embrace the outdoors, and to research globally renowned archaeological and fossil quarries. Museum visit and exploration. Check-in for first tour group at 9:30 am. 2^nd tour check-in at 10:15. 12 per tour; tour lasts about 1 hr 45 minutes.

• Lunch either at Abiquiu Inn or Ghost Ranch

• 3 pm Ghost Ranch “Landscape Tour”

• Drive to Santa Fe North, Hilton Buffalo Thunder, check-in

• Dinner

• Evening meeting

Day 9: October 3rd – Santa Fe, NM

• Breakfast on own in casino

  9:45 Drive to Poeh Cultural Center for museum tour.

• Lunch at Museum Hill Café

• Wheelwright Museum Tour

• Drop people off at either Canyon Road, Santa Fe Plaza, or Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

• Dinner on own in Santa Fe or back at Buffalo Thunder;

• Evening meeting

Day 10: October 4th – Santa Fe, NM

• Breakfast on ow
• Leave for Nambe Pueblo St. Francis Feast Day (to arrive around 9:30 or 10
• Lunch on own (vendors)
• Leave at 3 or 4, back to hotel
• Farewell dinner and conclusion of the trip.

Day 11: October 5th – End of Program

• Breakfast on own
• Return to Albuquerque to drop people off at various locations: airport, other hotels if they are staying on.
• Please do not schedule a flight before noon.
